Usually when you are thinking about traveling you are thinking about all the touristy things you are going to do – like going to the Grand Canyon, seeing the sand dunes, seeing the monuments and statues, and going to the casinos. Don’t get me wrong, these are all exciting activities that you should DEFINITLY do!
Something you might not be thinking of and SHOULD be is visiting the thrift stores and antique shops in the town you are visiting! Why buy a clunky picture frame or another t-shirt when you can buy something “off the beaten path” and usually for a bargain!
Why You Should Thrift During Your Travels:
- EVERYTHING HAS A STORY
Everyone loves a good story, right? Why not purchase something antique, unique, or one-of-a-kind!
2. CHOOSE A TREASURE FROM A DIFFERENT AREA
If you live on the East Coast and are visiting Arizona, why not get something authentic from Arizona that no one else will have!
Thrifting Hacks:
1. DO YOUR RESEARCH
Do some research beforehand to make sure you have a list of thrift and antique stores at your destination. Make sure in your list you have the store name, address, hours, and even reviews. If a thrift store doesn’t have great reviews then move on to the next one!
2. PACK LIGHT
Instead of packing huge suitcases packed with “everything and the kitchen sink”, pack light and shop when you arrive at your destination. Thrift stores are usually cheaper then big specialty stores so if you end up not liking some items, you can simply donate them back after you are done with them.
3. KNOW WHEN TO SHOP
Many donations come in on the weekends and do not actually get put on the shelves until the start of the new week. Instead of shopping on the weekend like everyone else, try to shop mid-week when everyone is at work and the new inventory is out.
What to Look For When Thrifting:
1. DESINGER FINDS
It is possible you could score a designer brand at a thrift store. Be patient and take your time going through the racks because someone’s trash may be YOUR treasure!
2. HOME & KITCHEN STUFF
If you are staying in an under-stocked hotel or vacation rental home you may need to visit the local thrift store! If you decide you are going to make a lasagna and there are no pans big enough – don’t go to the big box store, instead go to your thrift store! You will save some money and (depending on the type of thrift store) may be helping a charity in need!
Happy Travel Thrifting! xoxo, Megan
