Booking Your Flight:

Time of Flight:

Choosing the time of your flight is a personal decision you need to make. It is important to factor in travel time to the airport when choosing your flight. For instance, if you are considering a 5AM departure – you need to factor in travel time, TSA time, getting to your gate. Here’s what this scenario might look like:

  • 1:00AM- 3:00AM: Travel time to airport: 2 hrs. (this will change based on how far you are away from the airport)
  • 3:00AM – 5:00AM: Get through TSA & airport, find gate, use restroom, grab a snack, etc. (Remember, TSA always says to get there at least 2 hrs. early). Note: Boarding is usually about 20-30 minutes prior to departure.

Front or Back of Plane:

As for deciding if you want in the front or back of the plane as depends on your preference. For simplicity, we will discuss our favorite (the front) and why its our favorite:

  • You get to board first
  • You don’t have as many people around you
  • You get to get off the plane first
  • You get priority preference on where you store your bags in the overhead compartments
  • You get the complimentary snacks and drinks first, etc.

However; with all positives, there are negatives:

  • Front seats require you to sit longer to wait for the back of the plane people to board
  • You tend to get hit by *a lot* of travelers bags.

Seat:

When booking your flight and you notice nearly the entire plane is empty – LUCKY YOU as you get your choosing of what seat you want. Unfortunately, this is not usually the case! You are usually stuck choosing between about 10 seats ranging from front to back, aisle, middle, or window. With all of these options – its easy to be overwhelmed; but no need to fright – the Purdy’s are here to help!

When it comes to picking aisle, middle, or window – its really your own preference. However; think about what kind of traveler you usually are –

  • Do you like to look out the window?
  • Do you use the restroom frequently?
  • Do you need a little more space?
  • Do you have other passengers with you that you may need to check on?
  • Do you plan on ordering a lot of food or beverage?

Getting a Deal on Your Flight:

When it comes to getting a deal on your flight, there are a few tidbits of information I will share with you:

  • Check multiple airlines & airports to see which have the best flight times for you
  • Once you know what airlines will work for you, check that specific airlines website AND discount travel websites, daily & multiple times to see if/when prices go down/up

Heading to Airport:

Parking at Airport:

If you want to save a few dollars and you have time, you can park at a Park ‘N Fly, nearby hotel, or nearby parking garage and then they can *sometimes* shuttle you to the airport. Be sure to research this in advance to see if this is the right choice for you!

Parking Elsewhere:

Parking at the airport can usually save a lot of time and headache. Many airports have regular parking (near the terminal) and then economy parking (where you have to get on a shuttle bus to take you to the terminal). Choosing which will work best depends on your budget and how much time you have until your flight.

Boarding Pass:

You usually DO NOT need to print your boarding pass. You can take a screenshot of it on your phone and use that. Don’t waste your ink and time printing out the boarding pass as its not needed!

Checked Bags:

For the love of Betsy, please do not take big liquids in your carry-on bags! If you do, your really fancy Victoria’s Secret perfume will be confiscated *ugh, don’t remind me*.

Take Off Your Shoes!

So speaking of beauty – imagine you just got a fresh mani-pedi in prep for your tropical vacay and you show up in flip-flops, NO YOU DO NOT NEED TO WALK BAREFOOT ON THE NASTY FLOOR (yuck) – use your noggin and grab some socks out of your pack, slip them on, and WALA your feet are protected from the nasty floor!

Tips for On the Plane:

Food on the Plane:

Need I say more, but I will because some people don’t take hints!… DO NOT BRING STINKY FOOD ON THE PLANE! We ALL have to sit on the plane and smell that for the next few hours. Just don’t do it! Eat your nasty smelling food in the airport, leave your trash there, and then get on the plane. If you do not take this advice – yes, you are indeed the person everyone is staring at!

What NOT to Wear:

Actually that is a show and is probably trademarked. Whoops. Again, another SHOULD BE self-explanatory tidbit of information, but dress like you are going on an airplane (maybe long-sleeves, pants, have a sweater available, and maybe a small compact blanket).

Children:

First of all, why would you decide to travel with children? Either way if you have to, PLEASE for everyone’s sake, PLEASE keep them occupied and full! Bring snacks (no sugar – we do not want kids bouncing off the walls), toys, games, books, Gameboys (man that’s dating me!), etc. Anything to keep them occupied is much appreciated! Also, PLEASE make sure they DO NOT kick the seat in front of them! This is one of the worst things that can happen on a plane!

Act Like a Queen:

Either way, no one really *enjoys* flying, so remember to be on your best behavior and travel like the Queen is sitting beside you
