If you live on the East Coast, chances are you have heard of the Outer Banks in North Carolina (better known as OBX). The Outer Banks is a barrier island off the coast of northern North Carolina. This tourist destination has miles of sandy beaches, great seafood restaurants, and lots of opportunities for relaxing!

Most people have a “happy place” and for us, the OBX is ours! This year, for New Years Eve, Mr. Purdy decided to surprise me with a quick trip to the Outer Banks, mostly to look at houses (praying for a beach house in 2023), enjoy the great food, and enjoy some R&R (rest and relaxation).

Below is how we ate our way through a few days in our “happy place”!

Henrys Restaurant:

We arrived around lunch time, just in time, to enjoy one of our favorite restaurants, Henrys. Henrys is a local favorite in the small town known as Kill Devil Hills. The restaurant was busy but the food and service were still top-notch! Henrys serves breakfast until 1pm and then lunch and dinner after.

The breakfast is amazing and that’s what we enjoyed during this short trip! Sean and I share the ‘Nor’easter’ – a huge shareworthy-size breakfast entrĂ©e that is so amazing. Think biscuits and gravy at the bottom, topped with a cheese, sausage, and potato mixture. Ohh so good, and ohh so reasonably priced!

The Pony and the Boat:

The Pony and the Boat (yes, odd name) is a new-ish restaurant in Kitty Hawk. Look past the quirky name and give this restaurant a try as you will not regret it! In fact, the restaurant is so good that during our two-night stay, we ate there both nights. I know this is crazy, but we also ate the same thing both nights because it was SO unbelievably delicious.

Now for the details on why this restaurant is so good…. We started the meal with corn bread (not complimentary, but so good its definitely worth the few dollars). Then we decided to share a few entrees…. mac and cheese, and pot roast. The mac and cheese is not just any mac and cheese – its so hot, so gooey, and so good! Then the fall apart mouth-watering pot roast is nicely sat on a generous layer of piping hot mashed potatoes and gravy, and delicate hearty green beans and carrots were nicely placed on the side.

Make sure you plan ahead because this restaurant does highly recommend reservations, and it is so worth it, especially in the summer when all the other restaurants have hour-long waits. This is not the case at The Pony and the Boat; because at this restaurant when you show up for your designated reservation, you get sat. No waiting outside in the heat, and no going from restaurant to restaurant hoping to get a table (learn from our experience, this is not fun!).

As for the price – the food is all reasonably priced. For two waters, an order of cornbread, the mac and cheese, and the pot roast – the price before tip was about $45. Trust me, in that the food was SO worth it!

Hurricane Moes:

Another Kitty Hawk favorite we had to visit on our trip was Hurricane Moes. This fun restaurant/bar is full of quirky paintings on the ceiling, fun cocktails, and cornhole outside. While the restaurant is small and sometimes can feel crowded, this spot is a must spot for a no-thrills, cheap, relaxed lunch. It seems like on this particular day, the restaurant was under-staffed, so it was a little slower than normal… But hey, you are at the beach, so worry less, and be more happy!

The food we ordered was salsa and chips, queso and chips, and the chicken sandwich. All of the items were delicious. The salsa was spicy – just the way I like it, and the queso helped quench the thirst I got after eating the spicy salsa. My husband ordered the chicken and fries and by the look at his empty plate, one could say he thoroughly enjoyed it!
