Everything You Need to Know When Visiting Curacao

If you like shopping and walking, Curacao is the perfect port for you!! There are a lot of shops to explore in this great port!

Shopping Immediately Outside of Dock

There were many shops to visit when walking through the island. Make sure you wear your tennis shoes cause our feet were sore the next day from walking around so much! Most of the shops were souvenirs shops but there were a few shops that were interesting such as a Dutch inspired dish wear shop. We have collected a few blue and white plates from my grandma and had to pick up a blue bird to add to our collection.

Fort

This fort was MASSIVE! Long ago, it used to be a fort to protect the bay from pirates who would raid the island and its inhabitants. Now, it is owned as a Renaissance Resort where guests can stay and explore the island. To see how buildings were built in the past was a great experience for us. I had to pull Sean away from the signages as he was fully engulfed in the experience and tell him multiple times don’t touch! With all the shopping stores and restaurants vying for your attention, be sure to make time to see this fort. It is well worth the short pit stop.

Adventure

This was one of the few times that we did not partake in an adventure tour or excursion but there were plenty to choose from if you are feeling adventurous. There are island tours, distillery tours, water sport rentals, and so much more. The next time we come to this island we plan to do an island tour to see more and maybe rent a jet ski or two.

Floating Bridge to Curacao

The floating bridge was a site to see! This bridge spanned across the water that connected the dock to the main island where there were more shopping and restaurants to explore and try new foods. The bridge moves not like a typical draw bridge. While we are used to seeing drawbridges go up and down, this bridge moved as a whole unit from side to side! We were able to see it in action when a Coast Guard ship was heading out to the open ocean.

Food & Beverages

If you are a fan of fresh produce and fresh catches, there is a local farmers market that you can visit and see what is for sale. While most of the produce there was imported from other countries, Curacao does produce its own orange flavored liqueur. We did not try this as it was early in the morning. It was cool to see the fish that were brought in from the ocean. We did not eat a lot of food from the restaurant but as dessert addicts, we did try snow cones that were available via a snow cone cart. These were some of the creamiest and flavorful snow cones we have ever had. No ice and syrup on this cart! This was a really great treat on a hot day and the long lines proved how tasty it they were.

Artwork

Art plays a significant role in the culture of Curacao. A common word heard through the community is “Dushi” which has multiple meanings but the most common one is “good”. There are many art galleries and Sean and I always make an attempt to see the local artists and hear their stories on how they come to call these exotic places home. There were multiple murals to see on the streets and many Instagram worthy places to stop and take a pic and capture a moment.

Dushi! xoxo Megan and Sean
