Traveling can be so exciting, but if you haven’t traveled much, it can be frightening! Below are some tips for what to do the week of your travel:

  1. CHECK INVENTORY

Check to make sure you have everything you need. If you realize you are missing items, make a list of things you need and go to the store to purchase them. Below are a few items to check:

  • Toiletries
  • Medicine

2. MEET WITH HOUSE SITTER

If you have someone watching over your house, plants, or your pet fish – meet with them to discuss the schedule, expectations, etc.

3. STOP MAIL

The post office makes it extremely easy to have your mail held. Go to the USPS website, find the hold mail section, and follow the prompts. You can set it up so the mail gets delivered on the day you return or you can go to the post office to pick up your accumulated mail.

4. FINALIZE ITENIARY

Finalize your itinerary, what you are going to do and when you are going to do it. Make sure you print this out or have it on your phone for easy access.

5. TELL SOMEONE ABOUT YOUR TRAVELS

Do not brag to your friends about your upcoming travel, but please (especially if going solo) make sure someone knows where you are going and when. Share your flight information with them. In case of emergency someone needs to know where you are.

6. MONEY

Make sure you make a trip to the bank before you leave. While credit cards have taken over the world, its still nice to have a little cash for those places that only accept cash.

7. PACK

Now its time to pack your bags! Make sure you have enough of everything to last a few days longer then your trip! Many airlines are having to cancel flights with short notice due to COVID-19, so make sure you are ready in case of travel changes.

8. PRINT OUT TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Make sure you have your boarding passes, photo IDs, passports (if necessary), itinerary, etc.

9. TAKE TRASH TO GARBAGE SITE

Make sure you clean out your refrigerator and freezer and dispose of all items that may go bad during your trip. Then (the key) take the garbage to the garbage site to dispose of it.

10. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING READY & PACKED

Check and double check your bags, your print outs, and your purse/wallet to make sure you have absolutely everything!

11. UNPLUG & TURN OFF

Unplug items that do not need to be plugged in while you are away. There’s no need to be paying for these items to be running while you are away. While you are at it, turn off (or lower/raise) your heating/air-conditioning. There’s no need to cool your home for no one to be there. Obviously use your noggin and don’t turn it off completely if there’s a chance of a deep freeze or if you still have your pet fish inside 🙂
